Byword App Reviews

makes writing enjoyable again

Forget all that "stuff" that word processors do, just write. Clean, simple, no distration writting. Need something from another app, you can still "control tab" to the other app, then return. I use this for almost all my writing now.

Incredible App

Thanks for rolling with OS Xs Lions new features! It probably seemed redundant for you to use Apples full screen method when youd already built one, but it sure makes for a wonderful, unified full screen experience.

Great minimalist writing app.

Ive started to transition my workflow—and daily life in general—to as minimal as possible and apps like Byword make the transition easy. I love the feel of iAs Writer—the font and UI is unmatched IMO—but for the price, feature set, great updates and overal interest of the developers, Byword really is a no brainer. Highly recommended.

A Great Minimal Word Processor

I have really enjoyed using Byword. Moving from the bloated Microsoft Word to a program that loads instantly and gets me right to a clean, distraction-free writing environment while not lacking in any of the basic formatting options that a student needs is a real treat.

Great app from a great team

Byword won’t make you a better writer but it’s a fantastic no-nonsense Markdown editor and pairs well with Papers 2. The developers are very responsive and obviously care a ton about their product and their customers. If you write long things in Markdown, buy this app.

Minimalism is great, but a couple things have been overlooked.

On the whole, I am happy with this application and would recommend it. However, there are some deficiencies I would love to see addressed in the next version. I am not trying to turn a minimalist editor for Markdown into a programmers tool. These are simple things that would make the app more useable (I find myself having to copy the content into another app to perform fairly basic operations). I dont think theres any excuse to omit the standard ⌘] and ⌘[ key combos for promoting or demote blocks. This should work for all lists and on paragraphs should result in promotion/demotion with blockquote. Search and Replace need a couple improvements: in selection, wrap-around, from insertion point. Id like to see regex, but I doubt that the developers will want to implement that. Id like to see an export to Textile.

Awesome Application!

This is my absolute favourite fullscreen writing environment. The fact that it supports markdown just makes me love it even more.

zoom?

Until this app has some sort of zoom feature, it is unusable. Even at full screen using 12pt the text is TINY. The only way to write/edit comfortably is to use a huge font in 18pt and then you have to change the formatting before you print or export. High hopes dashed by disappointment that this feature is still missing, which was requested months.ago.

Impressive

I love this. It inspires creativity without distractions. A great way to write.

Amazing. But please add...

Still my favourite word processor. I use it everyday for lecture notes in class. Less distracting than other word processors. Please remove the scroll bar. Or give us the option of getting rid of the scroll bar. Looks bad where it is placed in full screen mode. And is distracting. Add cloud backup storage too Please! Thanks.

Its good, but...

I 87% love this app. The position of the scrollbar is annoying in fullscreen. The dark background isnt dark enough. Otherwise its a great app. I do my most productive writing in Byword.

Just the right amount of minimalism...

I was on the fence about a lot of the minimalist writing applications Id seen on the App Store. And after reading several reviews, I decided to give Byword a try. Im very glad I decided to give it a chance, as Ive found it to be an excellent app that does exactly what it offers. Just the right balance of functionality and simplicity; in a word, I think Steve would have liked this one!

Good for Markdown

Comparing to iA Writer. Pros: - You can use menu commands, so Byword serves as a tutorial for beginning Markdown users. - It has a more capable Markdown processor, so Byword is less annoying to work with for advanced users. - Byword allows you to change the font and font size easily. - Byword has line and paragraph focus mode. Cons: - Byword uses John Grubers syntax for new paragraphs, whereas iA Writer uses Git Flavored Markdown (GFM). If you absolutely need Gruber Markdown, this is a pro. But if youre learning Markdown or plan to use Markdown primarily to mark existing text documents, Git Markdown is better. - Byword lacks sentence focus, which is more valuable than line and paragraph focus modes. Probably combined. Draw: - Both include good support for Lion, including full screen and support document revisions. I use Byword, but the lack of Git Markdown support is definitely a problem.

Amazing

This is hands-down one of my favorite app. The design is mind-bogglingly simple, and the interface is beautiful in its simplicity. Great support for markdown and stunning typography make this app invaluable! …and no, Im not a developer. Just an enthusiast of great design.

Byword vs TextEdit

total waist of ten dollars! i mean textedit is much better than this! And you can edit the writing! plus textedit is free.

Great app

This is by far the best simple text editor I have seen as an App for note taking on the MacBook platform with corresponding notes on the iOS devices. On the MacBook, I love the simple and concise interface. I love that markup is interpreted in real-time and the markup (e.g. ** for bold) is minizimed in the interface as one types. A Solid app. On the iOS side - I love the syncing with Dropbox - However, I think that it should sync all files, or files in a folder without having to individually having to access each file - files should be available offline - its text files afterall, they are small and fast! Thanks and keep up the great work.

Almost Great.. But two big problems with the visuals.

Two Problems really.. 1. The Dark screen is not black enough, and you can see weird bars in slightly different greys. I think we would all prefer a straight black background. I end up using Clean-writer pro, which was only 99 cents, for anything where Im going to be writing for a while because of this. 2. The bold- auto mark-down thing is really glitchy looking if you have to write more than one word, it rapidly flashes to italic every time you press space. **VERY DISTURBING FOR A DISTRACTION FREE APP.** Id rather just put in the bold markings by hand, which kind of defeats the purpose of this app. Sorry to be so critical, Its a 5 star app otherwise, but I dont really use it because of these flaws. (particularly the first one.)

My favourite minimalistic writing app

I always think about trying out the others. And whenever I do, theres just nothing that compares. This has just enough features to make it a little bit more functional and usable in real writing situations than Writer (from iA), and its as bugless as can be. This team works hard, and pairing this app with the iOS version of the app is about as painless and blissful as could be! Love it.

Amazing!

This is pretty much the BEST plain text app ever. Seamless syncing from Mac to iOS. Only One tiny quirk compared to more with other apps. So worth it. (I grabbed it for $4.99 :)

WAIT!!!

Crashes on me 100% of the time on OSX 10.7
