Byword doesn’t do much. In fact, the only thing it does that my preferred text editor doesn’t is let you type in “typewriter mode”. Instead of paying $12 for Byword, I suggest using Sublime Text with a plugin that can output markdown files as HTML and Browser-Sync to edit your files with live-previewing. All for free.
This is my go-to app for publishing posts on my blog. I can compose using markdown, and I can even in include images in the text, and Byword talks to Wordpress in a way that makes the publishing of the post easy. It just works. I’ve had this app for a long time, and the developers continue to mature its functionality and features. I love that it is available on the Mac and on iOS. This is an app that I’m sticking with for the long haul. I highly recommend it for people who want to work simple, but not too simple.
Support for WordPress is just icing on the cake!
Byword is a great app for text editing. Useful, functional, lightweight and flexible. What more can you ask for? This app allows you to get everything else out of your way, and just write without distraction. Great for everything from notetaking to long-form material. Write first, format later by importing the text file into your favorite word processor, blog, or whatever. But if you must format in real-time, byword will allow you to use markdown syntax. And… it’s cross platform, so you can work on your documents from your phone, ipad, or mac, and easily switch between them. I use this app every day.
I’ve been using Byword for years now, and it’s still pretty much perfect at what it does: not managing large writing projects, just being a pure writing app. When I just want to bang out a blog post, Byword remains one of my go-to choices. It’s beautiful, *just* customizable enough to be able to tweak it to my liking, and always fast and performant. Perfect when you want to *just write*.
I had initially downloaded this app out of curiosity. Only after using it a while, in comparison to another markdown app, did I begin to appreciate how well this program is put together. It is in the little things that I came to appreciate it most. Things like when you hit the parenthesis or bold or italic before typing a word, both (opening and closing) show up. I also like that I can set my focus to paragraph as well as sentence… or if I want, no focus at all. Not only is this good for people who need to work in HTML, but for writing in general, it makes things a lot easier. Text can be exported as RTF, PDF, LaTeX and Word if you are so inclined. Also comes complete with reverting to past saves. This program is worth the money. I find myself writing more often just because it is so much easier. Definitely a plus. Highly recommended. 30 June 2016 A lot of editors have been released but I always return to Byword because it’s solid and it works. This is definitely one of the best apps I have ever purchased.
Its an app that delivers on what it promises. Perfect.
I continue to use Byword as a basic tool. The Markdown feature is a favorite for short HTML snippets for widgets on my website, counting characters for Twitter, and other words I want to put in text files.
This is my go-to app for all markdown. I’ve tried MacDown, Marked, Whiskey, Erato, Desk, Tincta, Omm, Hemingway, TextWrangler, and a few others. It handles extended Markdown, exports to HTML and PDF well. Good, solid markdown editor that gets out of the way. Love it. The iOS app is also superb and syncs well with iCloud.
Ive tried several text editiors, but keep coming back to Byword because its no hassle, easy-to-use inferface stays out of the way. I can write to my hearts content without distraction. Ive recommended it to friends, who have loved it too.
I originally downloaded this for my husband, who wanted something very easy to use to write notes for his book on an iPad. After seeing how well it worked, I got it for myself. I usually use Evernote for all my notetaking, but Evernote adds too much formatting code if you want to publish your text. I starting using Byword to write drafts for blog posts—super easy to use and export for publishing on my WordPress blog. As others have said, this app gets everything out of the way so you can completely focus on the writing. The Dropbox support is seamless. I often start drafts on my iPhone and finish them on the Mac.
DO NOT PURCHASE. THERE IS NO SUPPORT FOR CURRENT FAILED VERSION. I AM TRANSFERRING EVERYTHING I HAVE WRITTEN ON BYWORD TO WORD, SO I CAN ACCESS. I have used this program since 2012. I especially liked to write my first drafts here, and its very convenient because of link through iCloud to my other machines. But since I have upgraded, my iMac version does not recognize changes I have made on the iPad. When I try to compose documents on the iMac, the cursor hangs up, and delays displaying the text I have typed for up to a minute. All of the benefits of the program seem lost. Also, I have gotten no response from customer service. I have written several messages, and been met with stony silence. I have no choice but to reduce their otherwise excellent ratings with another review complaining about a very flawed upgrade, and an even more flawed response from the support team. Makes me sad.
Byword is a beautiful place to write. In this quiet environment my own thoughts are foremost. My favorite by far.
MiriamFW is correct. I installed this on my MacBook Pro and when typing it doesnt respond to the typing. One letter appears then nothing. A pipe character after a while. A couple of your keystrokes take effect 30-60 seconds later but it is useless to use. I really wanted to use this app but the only thing it is supposed to do (type words on a page), it cant even do that. Would like to put 0 stars but they wont let you do that. You have to at least put 1 star. And 12 bucks to boot. Just pathetic.
… I often start my pieces when I am not at home or near my computer and it’s just great that I can finish up on any one of my other devices with this app. When they added the publish function, the app became my best friend. Writing on the go? Look no further.
I wish I had kept and continued using the previous/earlier version. Simple markdown editor which automatically synched with dropbox and usable for notes readable on mulitple mac machines and devices. Not so, now. Hope the support team fixes this gaping hole, else will need to go elsewhere.
I emailed support about a problem I was having with image URLs. The developer sent me a message back right away. That’s great customer service! Thank you
Doesn’t scroll long texts in Sierra macOS. Just stuck on top section.
While not the most feature-rich of the minimalist writing tools, Byword remains the cleanest, fastest, and by far the easiest on the eyes which I’ve used. Byword is for people more interested in writing now and designing later. Additionally, its developers are refreshingly agenda-free. From what I’ve seen of their web-presence, their communcations are free of political, sexual, or religious (or antireligious) squawking, in any direction. They make a great writing tool and that seems to be all they care about, insofar as their company is concerned. MacOS Sierra has caused no problems for Byword so far in my experience. For those who’ve had issues with Byword on Sierra, I’m certain the guys at Metaclassy will patch it soon. Best to all, and happy writing.
